10 Signs You Might be in Burnout
What is Burnout?
Burnout is a state of chronic overwhelm or exhaustion. It can affect you physically, mentally, emotionally, and it can even impact your relationships. Burnout stems from undergoing chronic stress for prolonged periods of time without ever catching up on rest.
Imagine you are a cup, and everything you have to do and everything you have to experience takes from your cup. Eventually, if you're not pouring back into yourself you'll run out of the contents of your cup. When this happens, you're scraping from the bottom of the barrel and you're in burnout.
Let's talk about 10 warning signs that you're approaching burnout--or-- that you're already in it. Ten Signs You Might be in Burnout
1. Chronic Fatigue- Even after a full day of rest or sleep you still feel exhausted or drained.
2. Detachment- Having a negative outlook on your daily life (work, family, etc.) and not feeling focused on a solution. You might feel disconnected from what once felt personally fulfilling to you.
3. Increased Irritibility- Things that you normally had the patience for set you off, you seem to have a shorter fuse these days, your frustration tolerance is low.
4. Performance Regression- Feeling like you aren't measuring up to how you normally perform (not the high standards you hold yourself to on your best days).
5. Trouble Focusing- You might be in burnout if you find yourself having more difficulty concentrating or staying on task than usual.
6. Physical Symptoms- Burnout may come in the form of physical symptoms like headaches, stomach pains, sore muscles, tension in your body, even sleep disturbances.
7. Emotional Exhaustion- Feeling emotionally drained or like you have nothing left to give to your relationships, your work, or your responsiblities can be a sign of burnout.
8. Social Withdrawal- Pulling away from friends and family, avoiding social situations you used to find comfortable, or self-isolation may be signs of burnout.
9. Lack of motivation- Feeling uninspired or unmotivated to start tasks you once were able to accomplish with ease is a sure sign of burnout.
10. Sleep or Appetite Changes- Changes in your sleep cycle (needing more or less sleep) and your appetite (over eating or not feeling hungry) can both be signs that burnout is impacting you.
