Do you ever feel like your emotions actually get in the way of your relationships?
Maybe you hear or see others share their feelings and they seem to feel closer to the people around them but for you emotions seem to have the opposite influence on your relationships.
Here are three reasons this might be happening for you:
1. You may have difficulty communicating your emotions
Articulating our thoughts and feelings don't always come easily. For some it comes as especially trying. This could be because you don't have the language to really describe the way you're feeling, and it never quite feels like the word is there when you need it to be able to tell someone how you feel. Another thing that makes communicating feelings difficult could be the fear around feeling vulnerable, and wondering if it's even safe to share how you're feeling in the first place.
2. You may experience emotional flooding or overreaction.
Not everyone feels emotions in the same way. Some nervous systems are particularly sensitive to emotions and emotions simply feel more intense for some than for others. Additionally, feelings aren't facts but sometimes we have a really hard time separating our emotions from the situation at hand. Perhaps we've been told we take things too personally. Some people learned to pair emotions to situations appropriately, and others didn't. Not everyone knows how to have a curiosity about their emotions and how to problem-solve when their feelings don't quite match up to the situation.
3. You may avoid conflict until your feelings become too big to ignore.
Many people fear conflict and avoid having difficult conversations around uncomfortable emotions. This avoidance can lead to unresolved issues in relationships, resulting in really big, really negative emotions that become too hard to ignore for one person but feel confusing for the other people involved.
Regardless of how your emotions are impacting your relationships, you deserve to feel closeness and attachment in your life. If your emotions are interferring with your relationships, it might be beneficial to reach out for help today.
